I haven’t found any apps that I am willing to dish $$$ on yet, but if I do I will let ya’all know! These are the current apps I use – I often use some apps for awhile and delete them but some I use all the time and are forever keepers (Tweetcaster, Advanced Task Killer & Facebook for example). I looooove making lists and I am trying to find the perfect list app. So far I think I have tried about 5 or 6 but none of them did everything I wanted it to do.
Advanced Task Killer: I think this is an app that all droid users should have because you can set it up to close some or nearly all apps that are running in the background – either at the touch of the app widget, certain intervals or just when your screen turns off.
Alarm Clock: I hate to admit it, but I am the queen of snoozing. I have improved a lot since I was younger; but I use this as a backup alarm if my once super loud alarm clock is on the fritz. Also, I use it when cooking sometimes or when I need to set a quick reminder for something. You can set different ringers on it, choose the time, intervals and even how loud it is.
Android LightSaber: This is just a fun app I do when bored at home. It has a light siber on the screen and makes AWESOME noises when you swoosh your phone around. I got this to duel with my cousin – she has the iPhone version.
Antivirus: Every smart phone should have one. Simple as that! Especially if you go online a lot and/or download pics, apps, etc.
Aru Ringtones: A pretty decent free ringtone app. It has a fairly good mixture of old and new songs. Nothing too fancy.
Astro File Manager: This app allows you to search through the different files in your phone. Pretty awesome if you downloaded something and cannot find it!
aTumble: Tumblr app. Pretty cool because you can do all the basic tumblr tasks including uploading pics.
Diet & Food Tracker by SparkPeople: I just downloaded this tonight. I have been a SparkPeople member for a couple of years… not sure if I will actually use it though.
Evernote: A list/reminder app (HA!) Just downloaded this tonight and signed up for the website… I have read a lot of great reviews so hopefully this works for me.
Facebook: I cannot remember if this came on the phone or if I had to download it from the App Market. I do love the most recent update though – much more user friendly in my opinion.
FileExplorer: I downloaded this the same time as the Astro File Manager (which I use much more often perhaps because it starts with “A” so it shows up first in my menu). I used this maybe twice, but keeping it in case Astro fails… it’s free!
FlickrFree: I do not use flickr as much to upload pictures, but I love looking through others photos for inspiration. This is a good basic app.
Foursquare: I mostly signed up for Foursquare to see what my friends were up to and for when I actually travel then I can brag about all the cool places I am and you’re not… HA! I like the recent update. It is a fun app to use even though I update only a couple of times a month since I usually go to the same places so it is usually updated if I go somewhere I usually do not frequent.
Gmail: I love google and I love my gmail. I also love that my calendar is synced to my phone… AWESOMENESS! For awhile this app was acting up and would force close; however, they have since updated it and it is work smoothly again.
GoDaddy Mobile: I love being able to pull this up to check on my domains, search for domains, etc. on the go instead of trying to go to the actual website via the web browser.
Google Maps: Every time I use this app I want to laugh because I live in Hawaii and though this works AWESOME, sometimes it does not catch little side streets so I drive right past them. Also, my friend was visiting from ATL this past summer and he could not pronounce a lot of the Hawaiian street names so we went in circles 3 times before we made it to our destination – it was hilarious because he was totally tearing up those words and I could not help but laugh.
Google Talk: I do not use this app often enough to say how much I like it, but it works fairly well if you do use google to chat.
Last.fm: I love music and being able to listen to recommendation from Last.fm is pretty awesome. I use this app fairly frequently… but since I discovered Pandora… Last.fm gets plays every couple of days. I do like the widget because it has the main user tools that you need while on the go – “love track”, “block track”, “play” & “skip”.
Mobile Backup: This is a tMobile backup that syncs to your tMobile address book. Very helpful if your contact on your phone somehow vanish… it has happened to me once until I was able to get everything on my SIM card… now I can sync either way. I do like that you can go to the website and manually type new contacts in or link contacts and everything then send it straight to your phone.
Mr. Number Caller ID: One of my co-workers recommended this. It is pretty cool because you can do reverse phone number lookup as well as lets you block certain numbers from calling you (I have not tried that option yet… no need… yet… lol).
MySpace: I go on here maybe once a month to check on things and remind my friends & family to move on over to Facebook.
Nimbuzz: This is my favorite new chat app and since I have friends and family all over the world I use it DAILY! You can add your Windows Live, Yahoo, AIM, Skype, Facebook, etc. chat accounts and it is all in one place. You can also purchase credits to make phone calls. The only downfall… I forget to log out OFTEN so I am at work or school and when my phone turns back there are a bunch of “hey… why aren’t you answering me” messages LOL.
Pandora: I am so in love with this app and use it nearly daily as well. I can create new stations and listen to music anywhere. For myself I have no problems because I have an “unlimited” data plan, but make sure you check with your provider that using this app is not going to cost you extra.
PayPal: I do not send/receive money through this, I just use it to check my balance but I can see the usefulness of being able to do so.
PdaNet: I have used this a couple of times and it has worked great with our laptop when our wireless was acting up. It allows you to use your phone as a Wireless Modem, USB Tether, Bluetooth DUN, Wireless Router.
Pkt Auctions eBay: I use this to search listings and look at my own. Easy to use, but wish it had more options. It does have a cool barcode scanner option so you can scan something and it searches for the item for you.
pMessenger: I got this because a couple of my friends had it – but we barely use it.
Shazam: Want to know who sings the song that is playing on the radio or in a store while shopping? Insert shazam. It looks up the song and lets you know the title and who sings it. You can also hum or sing into it and it can look it up that way.
Silencio Free: I use this app daily to silence my phone while at work or school. You can set it for 15 minutes to 9 hours. I like that it turns the ringer/sounds back on in case I forget… Unfortunately for some reason the media volume does not automatically turn back on unless I am missing something in the settings. You can make it vibrate, blink LED, vibrate + blink or complete silence.
SK-LJ: I have yet to successfully upload something to livejournal with this. I am going to re-install and see if that helps.
SMS Backup & Restore: This app backs up your SMS (text messaging) so that if it gets delete you can restore it (do!) You can also get the text sent to your phone. Awhile back I was having issues with my SIM card and my phone would reboot itself and delete all my text messages and contact. Not anymore!
Taskos: A list maker… haven’t really used it much to see how it works. Will update if I do.
Tracker Deluxe (P&O): This one is for the ladies… LOL This is a Period & Ovulation tracker. I kept hearing so many females blog about it… It is pretty accurate for the period part… I do not have any use for the ovulation part so I cannot comment on that part.
TweetCaster: This is the most used app on my phone. I love that I can access all of my twitter accounts (personal and the ones for my current websites) – read tweets, tweet, upload pics, etc. from it.
Voice (Google): I love this because I can give my google voice number out to guys muahahahaaaa instead of my real number. Cool for texting and making calls when you just want to use a different phone number.
Voice Recorder: I use this mostly for school. I thought about using it to record short reminder notes, but I forget to use it. It serves its purpose and works pretty well. You can rename the files to things like “Hip Hop Lit Class Lecture 3″ or whatever you decide.
WordPress: I update this blog sometimes from this app. I like that I can add my different wordpress accounts, start a draft if I am out somewhere and have a post idea or want to upload something really fast.
YouTube: What can I say… sometimes I will listen to it on my ride to work (songs, lectures, etc.) – dontcha worry I do not watch it. I can add things to my favorites and do the other basic fun youtube things.
I hope this was at least a little helpful. What are your favorite apps?
LONG Backstory: I first fell in love with “smart phones” when my friend gave me a PocketPC when I was with Sprint a couple years back. From that point on it was all over! I loved that I could access websites, update blogs, check emails, etc.
After that I had 2 extremely basic phones and I was looking forward to getting a Blackberry because I had wanted one for a very, very, very long time.
Well… when I went to the store to get one (I was also changing service providers from a local provider that I was very unhappy with – the customer service and the phones) I ended up getting talked into a Motorolla Cliq – the main selling point was that it had Facebook & Twitter apps. I use Facebook a lot to keep up with friends & family in all the different states and countries. I could update really easily and see status updates of everyone on my contacts list. Also, I and had recently became a Twitter convert so the salesman easily talked me out of a Blackberry (sidenote: he probably needed to offload as many of them as he could though.)
I think one day I will end up with a Blackberry – maybe use that as a business line… we shall see.
As far as iPhones go… I am not all into the hype – though I think they are pretty awesome phones – my mom got one before I got my cliq and I made sure to have as much fun on it as I could. I would be interested in getting one if I switched completely over to all Apple computers so if/when that occurs then I will look into that further.
